Personal data of NS customers may be involved in a data leak. A supplier of software that market researcher Blauw works with NS confirmed yesterday that data had been misappropriated.

Last Friday, Blauw was notified that there was unauthorised access to the software supplier's network. The Rotterdam-based agency does not yet know what exactly was misappropriated.

As a precautionary measure, NS is warning 780,000 customers today about the possible consequences of the leak. Affected relations are asked to be alert to phishing messages.

Depending on the survey the customer participated in, personal data such as name, e-mail address and phone number may have been involved. The answers given may also have been leaked. No financial data or passwords were involved.

NS instructed Blauw to properly investigate how this could have happened. Blauw immediately took measures to plug the leak and prevent its recurrence. A report has also been made to the Personal Data Authority.
