An ageing population and the annually reduced intake of students in transport and logistics is threatening to constrain growth in the sector in North Holland, so Horizon College, Regio College and the regional business community are coming up with an action plan: Logmotion. The plan involves an amount of 2.5 million euros.
Logmotion aims to entice young people and lateral entrants in North Holland North and Zaanstreek-Waterland into an MBO education and a job in the logistics sector. With a grant of €2.5 million, education will be revamped, the business community will be more involved and two field labs will be set up where students will learn new techniques in a simulation environment. "All efforts should ensure that the Transport and Logistics and Commercial Vehicle Technician courses become more attractive and attract more students," says Horizon College project leader Danica Zewald.
Regional companies such as LVS Trucks, Bejo, Hanos and Breedijk Transport have joined Logmotion. Jacco Rijkhoff of LVS Trucks: "If we don't carry out this project, vehicles will come to a standstill and there will be empty shelves in supermarkets because there are not enough people to keep the vehicles on the road. That is why we will give guest lectures, organise excursions and offer internships and materials."
Interested companies can still join the initiative. Zewald: "The more companies join, the better. That way we can jointly put our shoulders to the wheel to prevent labour market tightness."
