Amazon has opened its first European air cargo hub at Leipzig-Halle airport. In the new twenty-thousand-square-metre hub, parcels are sorted and taken to and from two Amazon Airaircraft.
The new location in eastern Germany accounts for two hundred jobs, and the two aircraft based here are part of Amazon's fleet of seventy aircraft.
Amazon first flew its own aircraft in 2016. The online giant uses these mainly in the United States, for transport between different distribution centres. This year, Amazon included seven new air destinations in its network. Many of these are in the US, with the location at Leipzig-Halle airport being the first regional hub in Europe. It is unknown whether other locations will follow in the short term.
