EVO and Fenedex demand that the Lower House take measures against the
congestion problem in the Netherlands. With a petition, they pointed out to MPs yesterday
that traffic jams cost the business community 1.1 billion euros.
The organisations want the government to invest more in
infrastructure and accessibility. Next week, the Lower House will debate
the traffic jam approach. The reactions of MPs still vary widely at the moment, according to
read on EVO's website. For example, VVD MP Barbara Visser argues that
investments in more and smart asphalt are needed. Also Martijn van Helvert (CDA)
wants money to be allocated to infrastructure. "This cabinet has made 8
billion in cuts to infrastructure. If the cabinet had made different choices,
we would now have had good infrastructure as well as more jobs," says the MP.
The PvdA and D66 have other solutions to the traffic jam problem. For example, Duco Hoogland (PvdA) wants to combat traffic jams by pricing in
mobility. D66, for its part, is in favour of paying according to use. The party also wants to
money to tackle roads, but only in places where that really offers a
solution. "To really tackle congestion, pay by
use. Owning the car can then be made cheaper, by
reducing road and purchase taxes, for example."
