Web retailers have to process a large number of returns every year. Whereas in physical shops 8.89 per cent of purchases are returned, that percentage is 30 per cent for online shops. Invest created the infographic below on trends and statistics in online returns.
What is striking is the percentage of products returned due to damage. As many as 20 per cent of returned products are said to have already arrived at the consumer's doorstep damaged. The advantage is that a large number of these products can be returned for free, as 49 per cent of retailers have a free return policy. This is important as 79 per cent of consumers prefer not to pay for a return.
