Linde presents electric forklifts with lithium-ion battery

Linde Material Handling has launched its first series of forklift trucks with Lithium-ion battery. The trucks, with lifting capacities from 1.4 to 1.8 tonnes, would be able to be used for significantly longer thanks to the Lithium-ion battery.

Linde presented the forklifts earlier this year at the World of Material Handling (WoMH). Now comes the official market launch. The trucks with lithium-ion battery are said to offer great advantages through higher energy density and efficiency. The battery offers the possibility of intermediate charges, allowing charging during coffee breaks, for example.

Linde has developed two battery capacities for each of the five new models. If the operating conditions allow good intermediate charging, the smaller battery will suffice, according to the manufacturer. Linde reports that the larger, more powerful batteries - with capacities of 39.2 kWh and 45.7 kWh respectively - are more suitable when the deployment is more intensive, or when the trucks need to be continuously available during a two-shift deployment. To fully charge a small battery, the large charger needs about 50 minutes. Charging the largest battery with a small charger requires more than six hours.

Linde says it has implemented extensive safety features, preventing damage from overheating, overcharging or deep discharges, among other things. A shock sensor monitors the impact on the battery and a patented system ensures that regenerative braking energy is not returned to the battery but converted into heat.

A battery management system takes over the function of the control unit and thus has an important role in the high level of safety the trucks. The system monitors all relevant battery parameters, informs the operator of potentially harmful use and ensures that the truck comes to a controlled stop in case of a technical failure. A 25 mm thick steel battery trough protects the battery cells from external damage.
