Logistics service provider Feniks occupies a new 18,000-square-metre warehouse in Vlissingen. The hazardous goods specialist will use the warehouse for the storage of lithium batteries in accordance with PGS 37-2 guidelines. The warehouse will be leased by logistics property developer DHG.
The use of lithium batteries in products such as phones, laptops, e-bikes and electric vehicles is increasing. As a result, the demand for lithium battery storage is also rising, but there are risks involved. Lithium batteries can become unstable with overcharging, deep discharge, high and low temperatures and impact. In the worst case, short circuits, thermal runaway and fire occur, which can release toxic substances. During extinguishing, corrosive and toxic extinguishing water is produced, which can be dangerous for firefighters, other emergency workers, bystanders and residents.
Feniks Warehousing Solutions is responding to this with its new warehouse in Vlissingen. The warehouse complies with the PGS 37-2 guidelines, which focus specifically on the storage of lithium batteries. In total, the logistics provider has a floor area of 16,000 square metres, supplemented by a mezzanine of almost 1,400 square metres. The area of adjacent office space is over 500 square metres.
Part of SMARTLOG
The warehouse is part of SMARTLOG Vlissingen, a project of DHG. In total, this real estate developer's project consists of 80,000 square metres of storage space, divided into five units. All units are licensed to store lithium batteries. Interest in the storage space is high, according to DHG. The owner of the properties says it is holding talks with other prospective tenants.
