Logistics service provider Bleckmann announces the 'go-live' of a new automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) at its distribution centre in Grobbendonk, Belgium. The new integrated goods-to-person system is an integrated Kardex AutoStore solution with automated packing line and offers a streamlined alternative to traditional rack storage. It significantly reduces the inventory footprint and speeds up order picking and packing.

The new AutoStore uses up to seven times less space than traditional pallet racking to store the same amount of stock. This increases storage capacity, allowing more SKUs (from multiple customers) to be stored simultaneously and significantly reducing the risk of stock shortages. Items are picked by robots, saving time by eliminating the need for employees to manually pick products.

The Kardex AutoStore is part of an integrated solution that requires minimal human intervention. This includes an advanced conveyor system of box erectors and an autonomous packing station with box height reduction, which significantly streamlines the fulfilment process. "From the moment a product enters the AutoStore until it leaves the warehouse in a box, it has only been touched by one pair of hands," explains Stefan Schepers, automation specialist at Bleckmann. "This allows us to reduce the time between receiving an order and leaving the warehouse by up to 60 per cent."

An integrated solution

By automating the labour-intensive picking and packing process, Bleckmann's customers can, among other things, offer their customers later closing times for next-day delivery. "The AutoStore system automatically makes the most popular items more accessible so that they can be shipped faster," says Jens Hooyberghs, automation project manager at Bleckmann. "It is also possible to programme the system before peak and sell-out periods so that the best-selling items are available even faster - saving valuable time during those extra busy times."

Lights-out logistics

Stefan says the switch to the AutoStore solution has many other benefits: "The new system significantly reduces the risk of picking errors," he continues. "It also offers exceptional flexibility and scalability. This means we can start with a basic setup and expand it when customers need extra capacity - for example, during the Black Friday period - without disrupting ongoing operations." Another advantage of the AutoStore system is its low energy consumption. Ten robots consume as much energy as one hoover during their work. As the robots can work in the dark, energy can also be saved by switching off warehouse lighting.

Bleckmann is currently onboarding its first customer on the AutoStore system and will closely monitor the results of this pilot project in the coming months. "Based on the outcome of this pilot, we will evaluate the quality and efficiency gains enabled by the solution," Jens concludes. "We are excited about the potential productivity benefits and the potential for growth is huge. Kardex AutoStore looks set to become an important ally in making our operations safer, greener and more efficient."
