Deliveroo is abandoning a new pay system it wanted to introduce after all. The meal delivery service wanted to slash the hourly rates of delivery drivers, only to pay them per delivery. The couriers then threatened to go on strike.
UK couriers had launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund their strike. The aim was to raise at least £10,000. This amount was also comfortably met, but Deliveroo subsequently pulled the plug on the pay system.

Under this system, workers would be paid a flat rate of £3.75 per delivery, whereas previously delivery drivers were paid £7 per hour. On top of that, they would receive a pound per delivery. Because couriers have to wait a lot, their expectation was to earn less money. Moreover, the new reward system would create dangerous traffic situations, as delivery drivers would take more risks in traffic to deliver an order as quickly as possible.
More pay
UK couriers are demanding the company raise their hourly rate. They want to earn £9.40 per hour, while retaining the extra pound per delivery. In addition, they demand an expense allowance. Whether Deliveroo will also accede to these salary demands is not known.
Testing
Deliveroo was already testing the new system in several regions of London, but is now abandoning it completely.
