Deutsche Post DHL has opened a 40,000-square-metre parcel sorting centre in Bochum, Germany, close to the border with the Netherlands. This is DHL's largest sorting centre in Germany.
The parcel carrier bought a 140,000-square-metre plot of land in Bochum in 2016, on the site formerly occupied by an Opel factory. A 40,000-square-metre building now stands there, processing 20,000 parcels every hour. From next year, DHL will be able to process 50,000 parcels per hour there, making the Bochum premises one of the most efficient sorting centres in Germany.
Millions invested
The site accounts for 600 jobs. DHL is keeping the investment involved in the building under wraps. However, the carrier does say it is a multi-million dollar, three-figure sum.
Peak season: 11 million parcels
Deutsche Post DHL now has 36 parcel sorting centres in Germany, in which it can process 1.2 million items every hour. The company ships five million parcels daily in the country. During the peak season, just before Christmas, this number grows to 11 million parcels a day.
