DPD has moved into a new distribution centre in Maastricht where 15,000 parcels will be processed daily. The parcel service decided ten weeks ago to open the new location just before the holidays.
That goal was achieved. The new distribution centre has a total floor area of 6,750 square metres and a 250-metre-long sorting machine. The centre will create around 100 jobs.
By now supplying South Limburg from Maastricht instead of Eindhoven, the parcel service saves about 5,000 transport kilometres every day. This is equivalent to a reduction of over 400 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, according to DPD. The company will deploy electric vehicles for delivery in the region from 2021.
"With the opening of depot Maastricht, we are further expanding our capacity to respond to market demands and process peak volumes quickly," said Eric Dietz, CEO DPD Netherlands. "In addition, we have also looked at how we can further reduce our carbon footprint. We are doing this by deploying electric vehicles, but we are also looking at how we can plan our routes efficiently. By opening depot Maastricht, we can also significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of our transport here."
