Only around Tiel, Nijmegen and Zevenaar are XXL distribution centres still allowed to rise. The Gelderland provincial government wants to put a stop to the explosive growth of large logistics halls that damage the Gelderland landscape.
More and more large logistics companies are knocking on the door of the province and municipalities, a province spokesperson told Omroep Gelderland. Due to economic growth and changing consumer needs, the demand for bulky halls is high.
XXL DCs in Gelderland
At the moment, Gelderland, unlike North Brabant, for example, has one location where many mega distribution centres are located. This is Medel business park, near Tiel. An XXL distribution centre will also soon arise in Zevenaar. The first hall of 65,000 square metres is being built now and will be delivered next year. A second building of the same size will follow.
Limited number of destinations
The province considers logistics important for the economy, but also sees that it has a major impact on the Gelderland landscape, said the spokesperson. That is why it wants to designate Tiel, Nijmegen and the strip of Zevenaar, Montferland and Emmerik as destinations. This is because large logistics hubs that are easily accessible are already located there. It also hopes to make existing business parks more sustainable by focusing on more greenery and less asphalt.
