A Hyperloop between New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC may be coming. Tesla chief Elon Musk tweeted last week about a verbal agreement to build a tunnel for the Hyperloop.

In the tweets, Musk stated that the Hyperloop could travel between New York City and Washington DC in 29 minutes, a journey of about 350 kilometres. In each of the four cities, the Hyperloop will make a stop. Each city will have at least 12 pick-up points.

Verbal agreement

Musk, by the way, is keeping a low profile: for now, this is a verbal agreement. However, the top executive is confident that formal approval will follow shortly. Musk calls on Americans to convince local and federal representatives. The tunnels would be built by The Boring Company, a company founded by Musk in late 2016. This company is to drill tunnels for both the Hyperloop and Tesla cars.

To Bloomberg, the White House would only confirm that positive talks have been held with Musk.

Transport system in a pressurised air tube

Hyperloop is a transport system in a pressurised air tube. Capsules are placed in this tube in which goods and/or people can be transported at high speed by vacuum. The maximum speed achievable with this system should be around 1,200 kilometres per hour.
