As the ambition for emission-free transport grows and innovations follow each other in rapid succession, the Netherlands underlines its pioneering role in the transition to electric driving. From 15 to 18 June, the EVS38 (Electric Vehicle Symposium) in Gothenburg, Sweden, brings together leading companies, policymakers and pioneers to share the latest developments in e-mobility.
Europe faces major industrial challenges, with the need to ensure technological independence and accelerate the energy transition. Electric transport is an essential part of making road transport more sustainable. The Dutch delegation, supported by RVO, Rijkswaterstaat and other key players, is presenting in Gothenburg a wide range of innovative solutions and collaborations that contribute to a future-proof mobility system.
The Netherlands has been considered a leader in electric transport for years. It is among the European leaders in terms of charging infrastructure, EV adoption and policy measures that encourage sustainable mobility. With ambitious targets such as completely emission-free new car sales by 2030, investments in smart charging networks and strong public-private partnerships, the Netherlands shows how e-mobility is taking concrete and scalable shape.
More support for e-mobility in Europe
E-mobility is growing not only in the Netherlands, but across Europe. On 5 March 2025, the association E-mobility Europe called on the European Commission to maximise the impact of its Automotive Industrial Action Plan, aimed at boosting demand for electric vehicles and improving the sector's competitiveness, despite the recent easing of CO₂ standards for 2025.
Key proposals include legislation to decarbonise commercial vehicle fleets, increased support for European battery production and initiatives to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure, especially for trucks. Europe must act quickly to stay on track for the 2035-204 climate targets. A successful transition requires stronger coordination between member states, but also more intense dialogue between industry stakeholders and policymakers.
The EVS38 is not only in line with this European momentum, but also a leading event that highlights innovations and research and provides a platform for valuable exchanges and fruitful discussions. It is a forum that inspires, motivates and realises!
The rich programme with lectures, panel discussions, presentations, EV test drives and technical company excursions, also includes a full day (17 June) dedicated to European challenges. A wide range of topics will be covered, from market outlook and policy strategies to consumer behaviour, smart charging, optimisation of charging locations and battery recycling.
During EVS38, Dutch expertise also features prominently. Roel Vissers, Chief Commercial Officer at Milence, talks about how his organisation managed to scale up an innovative mobility service within the Dutch context. In doing so, he discusses cooperation with public and private partners and the challenges of large-scale infrastructure development for electric trucks.
Robin Berg, founder and CEO of We Drive Solar, also shows how the Netherlands is leading the way with smart charging infrastructure that goes beyond just charging. He shares how bi-directional charging and links with renewable energy generation contribute to a robust, future-proof mobility system.
The EVS38 programme
Besides the Europe-focused day, the main stage programme also pays attention to the host region Scandinavia with its progressive adoption of e-mobility and a preview to introduce the audience to developments, implantations, productions and industrial strategies around the world.
One of the highlights is the closing keynote of the conference, delivered by Arnaud Charpentier, Vice President Marketing and Mobility of Nissan EMEA, India and Oceania. During his presentation, Charpentier will discuss the company's electrification strategy and give an exciting preview of what customers can expect in electric mobility.
The symposium will take place in four event spaces:
- E-Motion Arena: Main lectures and plenary sessions with international speakers.
- E-Lectrified Stage: Masterclasses and symposia led by the event's partners
- E-Volution Hub: Hands-on and immersive sessions at the heart of the exhibition.
- E-Quation Lab: Scientific sessions on the latest research in the field of e-mobility.
Speakers include:
- Ebba Busch, deputy prime minister of Sweden
- Andreas Carlson, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing of Sweden
- Chris Jansen, State Secretary for Public Transport and Environment of the Netherlands
- Winfried Hermann, transport minister of Baden-Württemberg (home to leading companies such as Mercedes-Benz (Daimler AG), Porsche and car supplier ZF Friedrichshafen)
- Lucie Mattera, secretary general of ChargeUp Europe
- Elizabeth Connelly, IEA (International Energy Agency) energy technology and transport analyst
- Fredrika Klaren, head of sustainability at Polestar
- Vanessa Butani, head of global sustainability at Volvo Cars
