Southeast-North Brabant is the best logistics location for companies in e-commerce. This is evident from the first Ranking E-commerce Locations by Jones Lang LaSalle. South Limburg and Greater Amsterdam are also extremely good locations for companies in the industry.
Besides Southeast-North Brabant, South Limburg and Greater Amsterdam, Groot-Rijnmond and West-Noord Brabant complete the top five of the e-commerce rankings. The rankings largely correspond to the 'normal' logistics top five. It is led by North Limburg, followed by South Limburg, Southeast North Brabant, West North Brabant and Central North Brabant.
The study shows that the South Netherlands and the West Netherlands score well mainly because there are major ports and airports nearby, a good road network is available and because of labour flexibility. On the other hand, land prices are higher and there are also fewer available warehouses, and labour costs are on the high side compared to competing regions.
Randstad less popular
It is striking that the Randstad falls completely outside the top five of the logistics ranking, while Amsterdam and Rotterdam do appear in the e-commerce ranking. According to Jones Land LaSalle, this is due to the fact that "the presence of express services and labour potential is more important in e-commerce logistics than in a traditional logistics operation.
Research
Jones Lang LaSalle surveyed forty regions. From this, the researchers concluded that the landscape of the logistics industry is changing significantly. Mainly the major role of online shops is causing a shift. "Traditionally important logistics locations are also attracting e-commerce operations to a large extent," explained Sven Bertens of the research team.
Less good in Europe
On a European scale, the Netherlands scores a lot less well. The German region of Rheinland-Pfalz, located near the Luxembourg border, is the most ideal location for European e-commerce distribution centres.
