'E-fulfilment is weighed down by its own success'

Webshops and their logistics partners can hardly meet consumers' demands due to their own success. So argues marketing manager Alvar Piepers of Paazl.

At the Emerce Efulfillment event, Piepers speaks of a "dynamic and capricious" logistics situation. "Because online shops and logistics providers are so good at last-minute delivery, consumers are going to make massive use of it," the marketing manager said. Order volumes have increased sharply in the last period year. "That will continue in very short time," he said. But that is not without consequences, according to Piepers. "The walls of a distribution centre are not made of rubber. The situation is becoming almost untenable for carriers."

Paazl expects some parties to deploy a smart solution to this, Emerce writes. Paazl director Bernard Schreiner speaks of a reverse trend, with consumers receiving their order only after a few days. "They can choose to receive their order only after three or five days, with no shipping costs." This should serve as a kind of reward for relieving the carrier. In the UK market, this trend is reportedly already tentatively underway.
