Lidl has started construction of a new distribution centre in Almere this week. An XXL DC of at least 50,000 square metres will rise on a sixteen-hectare patch of land.
The German supermarket chain aims to achieve further growth from the new location. Lidl chose Almere because of its central location and the availability of a large plot. At more traditional logistics hotspots, such space is often not available.
Lidl's distribution centre should be operational in 2022. By then, branches in North Holland, Flevoland and part of Utrecht will be supplied from Almere. The arrival of the new location will involve three hundred jobs.
Sustainable
In building the DC, Lidl aims for sustainability certification BREAAM-NL 'Outstanding', the highest attainable certification. Among other things, there will be solar panels on the roof and the building will be natural gas-free.
Decommissioning DC Zwaag
With the arrival of the XXL DC, Lidl will close the doors of its distribution centre in Zwaag. This building was taken into use in 2005 to supply the northern part of the Randstad conurbation. Some 200 people work there.
