Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN), trade association for the air cargo industry in the Netherlands, and software supplier BigMile are to work together to support ACN members in reducing theirCO2 emissions. 'The aim is not only to create awareness, but also to jointly mobilise our members for concreteCO2 reduction measures,' says ACN director Maarten van As.

The business community is faced with the task of becoming more sustainable in the coming years. For instance, by 2030,CO2 emissions must be reduced by 30 per cent, with the ultimate goal of having climate-neutral logistics chains by 2050. This also applies to aviation, which is responsible for two per cent of allCO2 emissions worldwide. "Whereas aviation used to stand for progress and modern times, the environment and nuisance to the surrounding area also play an important role in the discussions being held now. So the air cargo industry will also have to take its responsibility and show ambition with regard to reducing itsCO2 footprint," says Maarten van As, who in his role as director of ACN champions the interests of air cargo.

Companies support

As an industry organisation, ACN has therefore signed the Sustainability Plan Slim en Duurzaam in 2018 together with some 20 leading transport organisations and knowledge institutes. The aim of this joint action plan is to reduce aviationCO2 emissions from the Netherlands to 2005 levels by 2030. In doing so, ACN aims to provide a platform where parties can exchange the knowledge they gain within it and thus learn from each other. Van As: "We think it is important that air cargo operators have access to the right information and get help in making their logistics processes more sustainable."

Collaboration BigMile

To help ACN members visualise theirCO2 emissions in the air cargo supply chain, it has entered into a partnership with BigMile, which will primarily benefit air freight forwarders and carriers in the first instance. They can now use BigMile'sCO2 software at a reduced rate.

This SaaS platform for calculating, reporting and communicatingCO2 emissions, gives users insight into not only their ownCO2 emissions from their transport logistics activities, but also those of chain partners. "BigMile offers users with an approachable and accessible calculation and reporting platform detailed insight to identify the most effective ways ofCO2 reduction. This innovative approach fits seamlessly with ACN's sustainability goals for the air cargo chain," Van As explains. "That makes us see in BigMile a valuable cooperation partner, a tool that adds value for both large companies and SMEs." Jan Pronk, managing director of BigMile further explains, "Many companies in air cargo sector will soon become or already are obliged to report. They can use BigMile to comply with this obligation. Through our platform, they can easily and securely share and reportCO2 data in the chain. In addition, the results of the calculations provide insights they can use to reduce first and last mileCO2 emissions."
