PostNL transports 13 per cent less air thanks to automated packaging line

Since introducing its automated packaging line at the fulfilment centre in Houten, PostNL has processed one million parcels with an average reduction of 13 per cent in packaging volume. This represents a saving equivalent to the load capacity of around 60 full lorry trailers or over 600 delivery vans. By reducing the amount of air in the packaging, more parcels can fit into a vehicle, meaning the available load space is utilised more efficiently.

The packaging line responds to the growing demand for more efficient and sustainable fulfilment. The machines help online shops to pack more efficiently and use less packaging material. Orders are automatically packed into a custom-made box.

The box is made from fully recyclable FSC-certified cardboard and requires no tape or shipping label. All information is printed directly onto the packaging. This includes dispatch details, branding, campaigns and QR codes. As a result, the packaging not only serves a logistical purpose but also provides space for brand experience and customer communication.

Stricter packaging regulations

“Transporting air adds no value to anyone. With this packaging line, we automatically create bespoke packaging for every order. This means online shops use less material, we make better use of the available space in the logistics chain, and we’re preparing for stricter packaging regulations,” says Tijs Reumerman, Managing Director of Platforms at PostNL.

PostNL’s investment in the new packaging machine is in line with the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will be phased in from August 2026. This regulation requires companies to reduce packaging waste, use more recyclable materials and minimise the amount of unnecessary air shipped.
