Attention to cybersecurity is growing, partly due to the new NIS2 directive. In chemical logistics, the consequences of cybercrime for society can be extra high. That is why industry association VNCW is launching a new, free e-learning for companies that store or transport hazardous substances: 'cybersecurity in storage and transport'. The course is immediately available free of charge to everyone in the sector.

Cyber attacks such as ransomware, data leaks and disruptions to logistics systems pose a growing risk to the chemical chain. That chain is of great importance to the Dutch economy, but at the same time vulnerable. With the new e-learning, chemical logistics trade association VNCW wants to help the sector better recognise and manage cyber risks.

"Cyber attacks have already caused a lot of damage to the logistics sector in recent years," says Luciën Govaert, director of VNCW. "Cybersecurity is no longer an IT problem, but a joint responsibility within the entire chain. With this course, we want to give companies practical support, low-threshold and at no extra cost."

Practical knowledge for daily practice

The e-learning has been developed by the International Foundation for Chemical Logistics(IFCL) and comes with financial support from the Dutch government through the SVO scheme (Versterking Omgevingsveiligheid industriële activiteiten) and cooperation from a number of companies in the sector.

The course is aimed at employees, managers and directors (including suppliers and supply chain partners) and covers such topics as:

  • recognising and managing cyber risks;
  • Specific risks in the chemical supply chain;
  • organisational and technical measures;
  • collaboration in the chain.

The course material is practically designed, contains recognisable examples from chemical logistics and aligns with the requirements of ISO 27001 and the NIS2 guideline.

Part of a broader approach

The e-learning is part of a broader toolbox for cybersecurity in chemical logistics. Along with the launch, the 'best practice Cybersecurity in chemical logistics', posters, leaflets and videos were also released.

Both the e-learning and best practice and toolbox for cybersecurity in chemical logistics are free to download for employees of companies storing/transporting dangerous goods and related organisations.
