Internationalisation in hbo has not yet come to a halt. Especially in computer science, the number of international students is overwhelming. At Fontys University of Applied Sciences, with locations in ten cities in North Brabant and Limburg, almost eighty per cent of computer science students are international. 294 students come from abroad or attended secondary school there. Fontys' hbo-ict courses also have 1,050 international students. This is according to analyses of the new 'Keuzegids hbo'.
In academic year 2024-2025, 16 per cent of hbo bachelors will be English-speaking, up from just under 13 per cent in academic year 2021-2022. In addition, the number of international students admitted to a fixus study increased slightly in academic year 2023-2024. Hogeschool Rotterdam and Haagse Hogeschool also attract many students from abroad.
The guide also lists students' opinions on the courses they are taking. Like last year, the differences in appreciation turn out to be considerable. For hbo-ict, Ede CHE proudly tops the list, followed by Zwolle Windesheim and Middelburg HZ. The programmes have four out of five possible stars. Only one star have Amsterdam HvA, Groningen Hanze, Leeuwarden NHL Stenden and Haagse Hogeschool. The latter gets by far the worst rating.
In computer science, there are two five-star programmes. Very good scores are Breda BUas (applied data science and ai) and Zoetermeer Haagse Hogeschool. Four stars are awarded to Den Bosch Avans, Venlo Fontys (software engineering and business information) and Rotterdam HR ((applied data science and ai). In contrast, the other computer science programmes at Rotterdam HR score very low. Haarlem Inholland and Leiden HL are also low.
For technical computer science, the best place to study is at Den Bosch Avans (five stars), if we are to judge by students' judgements. That course scores 78 points, while last-ditch Alkmaar Inholland gets only 19 points. Breda Avans is the best at business it and management. Diemen Inholland and Alkmaar Inholland also do well there. Nijmegen HAN, Leiden HL and Groningen Hanze score well in bioinformatics.
