Dematic globally introduces the Noise Reduction portfolio, a solution for noisy environments in logistics. This offering consists of audits with 3D noise mapping before and after of the entire facility. Based on this, customised rollers, slats and conveyors can reduce noise by 15 decibels.

To map noise levels, Dematic uses 3D noise mapping for on-site audits at customers' premises. This allows the acoustic load to be visually identified, similar to the way a heat map visualises temperatures. Dematic then creates a noise model to simulate how upgrading equipment can reduce noise exposure. Based on this, the company recommends upgrades and installs quiet rollers, slats and conveyors if necessary. Dematic conducts a second audit after installation to demonstrate the difference in noise before and after the upgrade.

Occupational noise

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), some 22 million workers in the US are exposed to noise loud enough to damage their hearing every year. Similar studies in Europe show that up to 30 million workers are exposed to occupational noise dangerous to their hearing. These results underline the importance of deploying technology and solutions that protect people's hearing and improve their safety.

"The well-being of our customers and their employees is a high priority, including hearing protection when working in noisy environments such as distribution centres," said Andy Randles, senior director global lifecycle support. "By implementing this technical portfolio, all our customers can reduce noise levels in their facilities, from a concert hall to classroom noise. With this, working environments can be vastly improved."

Job satisfaction

"We are proud to offer such a comprehensive noise reduction portfolio," Randles continued. "Reducing noise levels in facilities makes sense not only for employees' health and safety, but also for their job satisfaction. We have heard from customers that employee morale and productivity increase when noise levels are lower."

The new portfolio continues Dematic's focus on reducing noise levels in customer logistics facilities, allowing employees to communicate better and also hear safety warnings. Dematic already introduced new noise reduction features on its linear sorter in 2022, including low-noise guide shoes, merge guides and slider belts.
