The Christmas period is an extremely busy time for many
companies, which means that every year a lot of extra
staff are needed every year to handle all the work. In Germany, e-commerce giant Amazon is in talks with various recruitment agencies about employing refugees to lend a hand during the Christmas period.
Ten thousand seasonal workers
Every year, Amazon needs extra staff to process all the parcels and other
orders on time. In Germany alone, the American company needs around
ten thousand extra staff. The e-retailer hopes to expand its pool of Christmas workers to include refugees who have recently arrived in Germany. They are reportedly eager to get to work. This
it’s a win-win situation.
Not leftout in the cold
Ralf Kleber, head of Amazon’s German division, does not want to
out in the cold: “We offer the same pay as we do to other staff.
This amounts to an average of 10.40 euros per hour. We’re also looking at what these people
need to be able to work for us. This includes, for example, a
language course,” Kleber told the magazine Wirtschafts Woche.
Ice and strikes
Incidentally, the number of parcels to be delivered is not the biggest challenge facing Amazon. The
weather conditions cause the company a great deal of headaches every year. Ice and snow
are the main spoilsports. In addition, pressure is being exerted by trade unions which,
almost as a matter of tradition, call on workers to strike, thereby only exacerbating
problems are only exacerbated.
