US aviation authorities want to be more lenient in allowing commercial use of drones, but do not yet agree on delivery drones. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) released a proposal this weekend outlining new regulations around the use of drones. It mainly discusses rules regarding weight, flying altitude and the flying speed of drones.

The biggest barrier to the delivery drone is that the vehicle is not allowed to fly out of the driver's sight. While the whole intention of the delivery drone is precisely that it flies autonomously, eliminating the need for the driver.

Big players like Amazon and Google have been working on developing delivery drones for ages, but it looks like these drones will only be used recreationally in the US for now. The FAA says it does give the emerging industry a chance, but is concerned that the deployment of drones will harm airspace security and privacy.
