Logistics service provider CB is building a mechanised warehouse in Culemborg. The warehouse works with shuttle robots that manoeuvre between 150,000 totes.
With the new warehouse, CB is looking to keep up with developments in the market. The logistics service provider notes that assortments are becoming wider and that there is more need for storage of smaller quantities.
"In practice, this means we need to replenish 'grab stocks' more often. On the other hand, the size of an order per customer is decreasing and the number of orders is actually increasing, partly due to the influence of the internet," said Hans Willem Cortenraad, general manager CB.
The new warehouse will come before CB's current high-rise warehouse, with the first pile going into the ground this autumn. The fully mechanised site will be 30 metres high, 30 metres wide and 100 metres long. The shuttle system will consist of 150,000 bins and have a handling capacity of 2,000 bin movements per hour. Expansion by another 150,000 bins is possible.
Cortenraad: "Re-stocking is done fully automatically from this warehouse without the use of hands, and order picking is done in this warehouse according to the 'goods-to-man' principle - goods come to people instead of the other way around. The warehouse is also designed to be flexible and scalable in capacity."
