DHL Parcel adds four CityHubs to its network. With the new locations in Almere, Groningen, Nijmegen and Geleen, the parcel service is taking the first step in the ambitious construction plans it announced this summer.

DHL Parcel announced in July that it is investing millions in the construction of 26 new CityHubs over the next few years. Partner Aan de Stegge Twello is now starting the realisation of the first four hubs. These consist of an industrial hall with a sorting facility, are equipped with two loading and unloading docks for freight traffic and more than 30 loading and unloading positions for delivery vans.

The CityHubs are located on the outskirts of urban areas, from which an average of 90 trips per day depart, of which 60 during the day and 30 in the evening, with short routes passing 100 to 200 addresses. Because of their short distances, these routes can be carried out by electric vans, cargo bikes or other small vehicles.

All new construction will take place according to BREEAM sustainability standards, DHL says. The buildings will be gas-free, equipped with solar panels and thus driven by an all-electric fleet.

Two new sorting centres

Meanwhile, the parcel delivery company is building two new sorting centres in Utrecht and Dordrecht. The Utrecht location will open this autumn. The building in Dordrecht will follow in 2022.
