It can be called worrying: the number of thefts of loads from trucks. This number has almost doubled in a year, figures from Freight Watch International, the market leader in securing logistics processes, show. In the Netherlands, 53 incidents were counted in the last quarter, meaning the Netherlands is a favourite country for cargo thieves. Germany is the most popular with criminals. Our eastern neighbours counted 98 incidents. In Germany, about 1.5 billion euros' worth of truck loads are stolen every year.

Popular
Especially expensive electronics, clothes and food items are popular. A trend in thefts is that perpetrators are becoming more aggressive and planned. Thieves increasingly infiltrate logistical processes and then make their move. Besides this planned way of working, stealing trailers and cutting the tarpaulin of trucks remains popular tactics.

Rise or fall?
Strikingly, the figures published by Freight Watch International are very different from those published recently by the Ministry of Security and Justice. According to the ministry, there was actually a decline of over 60 per cent in the first half of the year compared to the first months of 2014. The difference in figures is due to the method of measurement. The European authorities, with which FWI cooperates, only measure major thefts, unlike the Dutch police, which includes all incidents, large and small, in the count and thus arrives at a higher absolute number, but notes a percentage decrease.
