GLS has commissioned a new depot in Amsterdam this week. The new building doubles the carrier's capacity compared to the former depot.
The distribution space in the port of Amsterdam covers 6,200 square metres, has a state-of-the-art sorting facility and 140 loading and unloading doors. More than 200 employees will be working there.
According to GLS, the infrastructure around the Atlaspark in Amsterdam offers excellent connectivity to the carrier's other depots, and the city centre can be reached in ten minutes, speeding up last-mile delivery.
GLS aimed for an 'ecologically efficient' building during construction, in which environmental concerns play an important role. A geothermal heat pump as the primary heat source reducesCO2 emissions. Solar collectors supply the building with green electricity. Prism-shaped domes on the roof capture sunlight and distribute it evenly across the distribution area, and LED lighting switches on when light is low and movement is detected. Finally, charging stations for electric vehicles have been installed.
