GLS has started modernising and expanding its depot in Wijchen, near Nijmegen. Two new distribution halls will make Wijchen one of the largest GLS depots in the Netherlands.
With the distribution halls and a new sorting facility, the capacity for parcel delivery company GLS increases significantly. The transhipment area grows by 3,200 square metres to a total of 6,000 square metres. Together with the new sorting installation, this doubles the capacity at the depot. One hundred doors will be available for loading and unloading after the renovation.
Solar panels will be installed on the roof of the building, allowing the sorting plant to be operated emission-free. A heat pump will be used as the primary heat source and the distribution hall will be equipped with LED lighting that switches on automatically.
Large location for GLS
The expansion will make Wijchen one of the largest GLS depots in the Netherlands. Due to its proximity to the German border and its good connections, the depot is also an important link in GLS' network between the Randstad and the Ruhr area, the company writes in a press release.
Growing number of parcels
"With this expansion, we are also responding to a growing number of parcels in Wijchen, having already opened a larger, sustainable depot in Amsterdam this year," said Milo Kars, Managing Director GLS Netherlands. "This allows us to optimally manage the growth resulting from the increasing number of online orders and continue to offer our customers high quality."
