GLS increases its parcel handling capacity with the opening of a sustainable depot in Amsterdam. An advanced sorting installation and 140 loading and unloading doors will allow more than twice as many parcels as in the current depot to be processed.

GLS has already started construction of the building at Atlaspark in the port of Amsterdam. The location offers the parcel and freight company a good connection to other GLS locations. From Atlaspark, the centre of Amsterdam can also be reached within ten minutes.

Capacity doubling

The opening of the new location increases GLS' distribution space by 6,200 square metres. An advanced sorting installation and 140 loading and unloading doors should double the capacity compared to the current depot.

"This capacity expansion allows us to continue to offer our customers a fast and reliable service with ever-increasing volumes," says Milo Kars, managing director of GLS Netherlands. "At the same time, this new depot fits in with our efforts to minimise the environmental impact in our network and create attractive jobs."

Solar panels and heat pump installation

GLS is taking sustainable measures to minimise its environmental impact. Solar panels on the roof will provide the depot with electricity, while the use of a heat pump installation will further reduce raw material consumption andCO2 emissions. Charging stations for electric vehicles will also be installed.

Attractive jobs

More than two hundred employees will start work at the location. GLS wants to create an attractive working environment for them, the company said in a press release. Employees will benefit, among other things, from a new company canteen and larger office space. Skylights in the transhipment hall will provide more daylight. Drivers enjoy better ergonomics when loading and unloading their vans and trucks because the loading surface and the depot floor are at the same height.
