Hoogvliet has opened its new distribution centre in Bleiswijk. The building, which covers an area of 72,000 square metres including service centre and butchery, will be taken into use in a few weeks.

Hoogvliet started construction of a new distribution centre, service centre and butchery in Bleiswijk in 2018. The realisation aimed for sustainability label BREEAM Outstanding, the highest achievable sustainability class for buildings. The building and cold stores have extra insulation, no natural gas is used and the roof of the distribution centre will have 42,000 square metres of solar panels.

By commissioning a new distribution centre, Hoogvliet hopes to be the most 'attractive omnichannel supermarket within its market area, with the lowest possible logistics cost structure', CEO Siep de Haan said during his opening speech.

Robust logistics backbone

In the new premises, dry groceries as well as fresh, AGF and frozen items will be processed largely automatically into shipments to one of Hoogvliet's seventy branches. The processing of returnable packaging will also take place via the new location. From 2021, Hoogvliet's central butchery will also be part of the new building. With the integration of all these components, Hoogvliet says it has a 'robust logistics backbone'.

Distribution centre Alphen aan den Rijn

The supermarket chain will close its current distribution centre in Alphen aan den Rijn this year. Initially, Hoogvliet wanted to expand capacity here, but no agreement could be reached with the municipality.
