The Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) is not concerned that some drivers may not be able to comply with Code 95 on time. "We are going to check strictly and know no pardon," the ILT told the Telegraaf.

The newspaper writes that truckers are negligent about the mandatory in-service training they must take to comply with Code 95. A tour by EVO reportedly showed that 65 per cent of companies still need to retrain drivers. They have until 10 September to do so. That is tight, as drivers spend 35 hours on refresher training.

According to ILT, drivers have themselves to blame for getting into trouble now. "It has been known for years that this date was coming. But many drivers have been putting it off, thinking it's no big deal and there won't be any enforcement anyway. But then they are counting beyond their worth," said ILT's Lianne Sleutjes. If a driver is stopped after 10 September and does not comply with the Code 95 obligation, he will have to pull over his truck. In addition, there is a chance of an 800-euro fine.
