Investing in workplace safety and health also offers financial benefits. This is according to a study by European agency EU-OSHA and 13 case studies in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Improving working conditions
The study focuses on Dutch companies that invested in health and safety-friendly machinery and equipment through a grant scheme. The study revealed that working conditions improved by 76 per cent. In other words, 40 per cent of employers were very positive about the new working conditions and 36 per cent were reasonably positive.

Incentive scheme
But improving working conditions is not the only benefit of this investment. It also pays off financially. Every euro invested in safety is estimated to yield a return of 2.2 euros. This is due to a reduction in sick leave and because companies can claim subsidies offered by the government, known as the incentive scheme.
