Laurens Penners won the Dutch Material Handling Thesis Award, the first thesis award for material handling, during the first day of Logistica.
Penners conducted research at Vanderlande on routing strategies of shuttles in storage and order picking systems. Vanderlande currently uses the shuttle system Adapto and wanted to know if it could be improved with a different routing and layout strategy.
With the thesis, Penners managed to stand out from the other six entries for the award. Penners has since graduated from Eindhoven University of Technology and was abroad for work. Therefore, he was not present to receive the award, but will receive a cash prize of 1,000 euros for his master's thesis.
