Supermarket chain Lidl is to supply shops from Almere. The discounter has signed an agreement to build a 50,000-square-metre distribution centre.

Lidl will occupy a 16-hectare plot on the Stichtsekant business park in Almere. The distribution centre rising there should support Lidl's further growth. "Thanks to its central location in the Netherlands, we can be even more efficient in the logistics of our organisation. Moreover, we are making a sustainable investment in the further growth of our branch organisation in the Netherlands," said Harm van Oorschot, Director of Central Services at Lidl Netherlands.

In building the DC, Lidl is aiming for sustainability certification BREAAM-NL 'Outstanding', the highest attainable certification.

Lidl DC in Oosterhout

In February, Lidl opened another distribution centre in Oosterhout. With a surface area of 54,000 square metres, it is one of the largest properties of the retail chain in Europe, supplying around 70 stores in the region from Oosterhout. Lidl was also praised for its sustainability measures during the construction of this building. For example, there will be 8,000 solar panels on the roof and the LED lighting automatically switches off when there are no people in the room.
