Discounter Lidl has opened its most sustainable distribution centre to date in Almere. From the building of over 54,000 square metres, some 70 stores will now be supplied.
The new DC was festively opened on Friday. Around 300 employees will work there, preparing and delivering products to 70 stores in the North Holland region, Flevoland and part of Utrecht. Previously, this was done from the DC in Zwaag in North Holland. This location has since been closed.
Lidl says it will be able to more efficiently manage the supermarket chain's logistics from Almere. The mega distribution centre also offers room for further growth.
Some 7,000 panels are installed on the building's roof, saving the discounter around 1,040 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Lidl also uses green electricity and energy there, and all rainwater is used for the toilets and sprinkling the greenery. Other sustainable features include LED lighting controlled by motion sensors and charging points for electric cars and trucks.
