Lidl will stop its distribution activities in Zwaag in North Holland. The construction of an XXL DC in Almere will make the existing distribution centre in Zwaag redundant.
This writes the Noordhollands Dagblad in response to a letter from alderman Ben Tap to the municipal council. Lidl announced the construction of a logistics centre in Almere in April. On a 16-hectare plot, it will place a 50,000-square-metre distribution centre. With the new location, the mass retailer aims to optimise and centralise its logistics.
The distribution centre was commissioned in 2005 to supply the northern part of the Randstad conurbation. Some two hundred people work there.
DC closes in 2021
The DC is expected to close in 2021, when the construction of the property in Almere is completed. Lidl has indicated it does not yet want to sell the distribution centre in Zwaag. The supermarket chain is looking for a new use for the property.
