Transport companies and logistics service providers have benefited considerably from the price of diesel recently. A hefty drop in the price has drastically reduced costs for these companies. This is according to the annual report of shippers' organisation EVO.

Transport companies and logistics service providers are benefiting from the dropped diesel price. The sharp fall in the price of petrol is good news for freight transport, as road transport became cheaper again in 2014, according to EVO's survey. Due to the low diesel price, transporters are on average ten per cent cheaper than during the crisis years. From November 2013, the price of fuel fell by ten per cent. Incidentally, this was not the lowest price; that was in the year 2012.

Hauliers happy
Companies in logistics are delighted with the low price of fuel. Traditionally, fuel costs are a big part of total logistics costs. So there are significant savings here. In line with the savings, and because the crisis is now being increasingly pushed back, more trucks are driving. In the past year, the number of vehicles increased by over 1 per cent to more than 100,000 cars. This is still less than the pre-crisis number (112,000), but still a boost for the entire industry. More companies are also joining which is more good for employment.

New type of wagons
EVO also states that there is more experimentation with longer and heavier trucks. Several European countries are testing the new cars that have some advantages over the old trucks. The new types save costs and are more environmentally friendly because the new trucks replace three trucks with two.
