MediaMarkt will operate from its new distribution centre in Etten-Leur as early as next summer. The Brabant DC will supply all physical branches and MediaMarkt's online customers with products.
There was still some secrecy surrounding MediaMarkt's move to Etten-Leur in recent weeks. At a press event on Thursday, more text and explanation was given about the new premises to be built.
The distribution centre is currently being built by ASK Romein. It will have an area of 70,000 square metres and will consist of five units, of which MediaMarkt will use four, accounting for 55,000 square metres of use. There, logistics service provider ID Logistics will take care of day-to-day operations. Another tenant will be sought for the remaining unit.
Centralisation of logistics
From Etten-Leur, MediaMarkt expects to save many kilometres. The chain works together with hundreds of suppliers, who currently still bring the articles directly to the 49 physical branches of MediaMarkt.
The electronics chain wants to make that process more efficient by storing most of its range of 25,000 products in Etten-Leur. From the summer, some 140 trucks will drive back and forth daily. "We are going to save ourselves a lot of kilometres from Etten-Leur. Moreover, the location on highways between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp is ideal," cfo Michael Söhlke told BN de Stem.
Faster to the online customer
MediaMarkt also hopes to reach online customers faster thanks to its convenient location. "We want to be sure we can deliver quickly. Especially to our online customers who want their items delivered to their homes quickly. That market is also increasingly important for us."
Ram raids impossible
The new warehouse will be TAPA A certified, which is the highest achievable security standard in the transport sector. The site will be divided into three perimeters, each with specific security measures. To make ram-raids impossible, there will be special fences, raised coping stones and security glass.
The new distribution centre will employ 150 people. The current premises in Nieuwegein will close its doors after a transitional period.
