Nedcargo has been given the green light for expansion of its site in Haaften. The Council of State rejected all objections from local residents and boaters against the expansion.

The logistics service provider may expand its storage site along the river Waal by 40,000 square metres, double the current situation. NedCargo is also allowed to extend the loading and unloading quay by 200 metres.

Nedcargo's expansion plan has occupied minds for years. Local residents and bargees feared a sharp increase in noise and light pollution.

The Council of State has now ruled that there are no unacceptable noise and environmental obstacles. The lighting around the port may not exceed 16 metres in height, limiting light nuisance. As there will be a maximum of 400 truck movements and 220 car movements daily, the council does not expect any traffic problems around the site.

Should it later turn out that nearby houses still experience more noise, a higher noise barrier can be placed, according to the Brabants Dagblad.

Nedcargo reacted to the news with relief on Twitter. "It was about time," the logistics provider wrote.
