Picnic is moving into a new distribution centre in Berkel en Rodenrijs in South Holland. The doors of the building will not open at the end of this year, but already in March. It is the second location Picnic will move into earlier than planned.
Since the corona crisis, the number of orders at the online supermarket has been on the rise considerably. The opening in Berkel en Rodenrijs was actually planned for the end of 2021, but will thus be brought forward. By doing so, Picnic hopes to take pressure off other logistics centres. "By doing so, we are creating extra capacity with which we can deliver thousands of extra orders daily throughout the Netherlands," says co-founder Michiel Muller.
The property on Da Vincistraat has an area of 20,000 square metres. This makes it one of Picnic's largest locations. Only the DC in Apeldoorn, which also opened early this year, has the same size.
Employment
Around five hundred employees will soon start working in Berkel en Rodenrijs. Muller: "It's nice that in these times, when employment in many industries has unfortunately declined due to corona, we can possibly find people a job with us."
Robotised DC in Utrecht
Besides Berkel en Rodenrijs and Apeldoorn, Picnic has distribution centres in Rotterdam, Diemen, Eindhoven and Utrecht. Later this year, the app-only supermarket will open a fully robotised distribution centre in Utrecht. From all these locations, groceries are distributed to the more than 100 locations where Picnic now operates.
