PLUS has nevertheless obtained the necessary permit to build a mechanised distribution centre in Oss. Negotiations between the supermarket chain and the municipality of Oss had been going on for months. Construction will now start in summer 2020 after all.
Talks between PLUS and the municipality of Oss had been going on since early 2019. Only this week, the supermarket received the green light for the construction of a new distribution centre, which can replace PLUS's four current DCs. "Obtaining the permit is a very important milestone in the realisation of our new distribution centre," said Rowell Versleijen, director of logistics at PLUS Retail. "In this competitive industry, it is very important that PLUS can maintain a strong competitive position also in the future. This new sustainable distribution centre is going to make an important contribution to that."
400,000 packages
A 46,000-square-metre building is to rise on Vorstengrafdonk industrial estate in Oss to supply all 272 branches of the supermarket chain. The building will have 92 loading and unloading doors and a production capacity of 400,000 packages per day.
DC in use in two years
The new distribution centre will be largely mechanised. This should ensure more efficient delivery of the PLUS branches. Construction is scheduled to start around summer 2020. The chain expects the construction of the building to be ready next year so that the mechanisation can be set up, so that the new distribution centre can then be taken into use in late 2022/early 2023. From then on, the activities of the four existing distribution centres in Haaksbergen, Middenbeemster, Hendrik Ido Ambacht and Ittervoort will be gradually transferred.
