Construction work on the PLUS distribution centre in Oss has finally started. The national distribution centre, which is to replace four regional DCs, had been in the planning for years.

The distribution centre, to be completed by the end of 2022, is intended for the storage and distribution of long-life products. The 46,000 square metre building will replace four existing distribution centres in Haaksbergen, Middenbeemster, Hendrik Ido Ambacht and Ittervoort. All PLUS branches will be supplied from the new location. Through centralisation and extensive mechanisation, the supermarket chain expects to be able to do so more efficiently.

From Tiel to Oss

The arrival of the logistics centre in Oss took some doing. PLUS had previously planned to locate the distribution centre in Tiel. However, the municipality of Tiel was unable to issue a building permit, so PLUS moved to Oss. There too, it took longer than expected for the municipality and the retailer to reach an agreement.

Employment

Frank den Brok, alderman of the municipality of Oss, says: "After a long time of preparation, the ground is now being broken into. Soon, more than 270 PLUS supermarkets will have all their long-life products delivered from a state-of-the-art, mechanised distribution centre at Vorstengrafdonk. And PLUS will immediately become one of the larger employers in Oss. We are already proud of that."

Construction work

Construction company Van de Ven has now started the first preparatory construction work. The coming period will be dominated by foundation work and raising the site. By the middle of next year, it is expected that mechanisation work can start.
