In a large number of Russian prisons, prisoners now have the opportunity to shop online. At the online shop FSIN-Zakaz, they can order various soft drinks, deodorant and chocolate bars, among other things.
Special shop for prison orders
A special webshop has been set up where prisoners' orders are placed. The online shop, which has been named FSIN-Zakaz, has a range of products that the convicts are allowed to order. Among others, various soft drinks, spring water and chocolate bars may be ordered. There is also an option to order deodorant or books. For security reasons, the ordering of goods is not done directly by the convicts themselves, but through family or friends. They may place orders in the name of the person in prison.
Special mail service
Prisoners are also given the opportunity to send e-mails. The e-mails are handled by a specialised company. As the prisoners themselves are not allowed to use a computer, e-mails are printed out and handed to the prisoners. They are allowed to reply to them in writing. These replies, once checked, are then scanned and sent by e-mail to the addressees.
400 prisons
FSIN-Pismo, FSIN-Zakaz's sister company, runs the processes and the service found great favour in 2014, as the company processed a total of 320,000 mails.
The service started as the company Prisonmail.eu and was founded by Russian Konstantin Antsiferov and Dutchman Rob Hollander. In Russia, the service is already available in 400 prisons and is also a success in other countries, including our own.
