DB Schenker and MAN, together with Fresenius University, are launching a practical trial for 'connected trucks' in the logistics sector. This is a realistic practical trial, which means the platooning will be tested in DB Schenker's regular schedule.

MAN already worked with the platooning technology, where all vehicles in a convoy are connected, during the European Truck Platooning Challenge in 2016. According to the parties, it is now time for the next step: deployment under daily conditions. This means that MAN's test trucks will be deployed on journeys between Munich and Nuremberg according to DB Schenker's regular schedule. For the first time, this will be done with DB Schenker drivers - in previous platooning tests, MAN used test drivers. From April, the test vehicles will operate in convoy on the A9 motorway.

Daily deployment

DB Schenker is conducting the first tests without cargo. The focus will be on investigating traffic flows and training drivers. In mid-2018, rides with cargo will follow according to the logistics provider's regular schedule. Eventually, the convoys will shuttle three times a day between the DB Schenker distribution centres in Munich and Nuremberg.

Research into impact on drivers

Fresenius University will establish and evaluate the results in the project. The main aim is to find out what impact the new technology has on drivers. Therefore, the research focuses on neurophysiological and psychosocial levels. The results will be used in the development of new technologies.
