VTS Transport & Logistics has equipped its 325 vehicles with mobile devices from Zebra. The new devices replace the existing on-board computers, which were inflexible and prone to failure. VTS drivers use Zebra's devices for, among other things, scanning shipments, confirming deliveries and reducing administrative operations.
Based in the Netherlands, VTS works for leading pharmaceutical companies across Europe. The company specialises in temperature-controlled transport, storage and handling, where precision and safety are key. Operating from locations in the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland, VTS has a fleet of more than 325 trucks and trailers and over 60,000 square metres of storage capacity.
Due to the growing distribution network, the existing on-board computers no longer met the organisation's requirements. They proved inflexible and prone to failure, creating challenges for frontline staff and the IT team. "Our drivers, warehouse staff and IT teams depend on stable and reliable technology," says director Nick Lenting, responsible for IT projects, innovation and strategy at VTS.
"We needed a modern and unified platform that supports both regional and international logistics processes. Our objective was to provide employees with reliable tools that simplify workflows, increase accuracy, reduce downtime and integrate seamlessly with our logistics software platform."
Moment of truth
For the implementation, VTS worked with Zebra partner Actemium. Which implemented a frontline solution consisting of Zebra's TC2X Series mobile devices and ET4 Series rugged tablets. "In logistics, every link in the chain is a 'moment of truth'," says Phil Sambrook, transport and logistics vertical strategy lead at Zebra Technologies. "We build trust by supporting frontline workers with intuitive and reliable technology that connects them, both inside and outside the warehouse."
Zebra's solution allows VTS' drivers to scan shipments in real-time, confirm locations and deliveries instantly and reduce administrative operations. This speeds up processes and increases accuracy. The improved reliability of the devices has reduced costly downtime and closed service gaps.
Central management
VTS' IT team also benefits from time savings and reduced workload, thanks to centralised management of devices and remote updates via Zebra DNA Cloud software. "The unified setup means we no longer have to worry about fragmented devices or differing configurations," says Lenting. "With the right technology and guidance, we have successfully integrated our systems and laid a solid foundation for efficient and sustainable logistics processes."
In addition, the solution also contributes to VTS' CO₂ reduction and net zero ambitions. More efficient route planning, reduced delays and durable, easily repairable devices support the sustainability of the logistics operation.
