Logistics software specialist Descartes is acquiring several parts of US-based Velocity Mail, an electronic transport network that develops scanning and tracking solutions for air cargo carriers.

Velocity Mail's network acts as a link between commercial airlines, their logistics partners and government postal agencies. Velocity Mail automates the entire shipping process: from route calculation to reconciliation with accounting.

Velocity Mail's network operates on the same basis as the Descartes Global Logistics Network. Descartes' cloud-based solutions also allow customers to plan, direct, track and measure deliveries.

Descartes aims to strengthen position in e-commerce market

"The combination of Velocity Mail solutions and the Descartes Global Air Messaging Gateway provides air cargo carriers with a single platform to track and manage any cargo from start to finish, whether it's e-commerce or parcel shipments or larger cargo shipments," said Edward J. Ryan, ceo of Descartes. "In addition, it strengthens our position in the growing international e-commerce market. International air cargo carriers and their partners are key components of our Global Logistics Network."

The acquisition involves $25.5 million (€22 million).
