Zalando aims for a climate-neutral operation in the coming years. The online platform for fashion and lifestyle is today presenting its sustainability strategy 'do.More', in which it promises, among other things, to minimise packaging waste and make deliveries and returns climate-neutral.

In 2019, Zalando said it was already switching to 90 per cent renewable energy at all its sites. The online platform is betting on order bundling and green delivery options for both delivery and returns. CO2 emissions that are not avoided will be neutralised this year.

By 2023, the company aims to minimise packaging waste and reuse materials as much as possible. Boxes and shipping bags already consist largely of recycled materials. In the future, the focus will be on excluding single-use plastic.

Extend life of items

The etailer says it wants to extend the lifespan of fashion items by applying the principles of circularity. It does this, among other things, with its resale platform 'Zalando Wardrobe'. Zalando expects to sell 1 million items through the platform this year.

'Part of the problem'

"The fashion industry is facing complex sustainability challenges," says Co-CEO Rubin Ritter about the strategy. "We know we have been part of the problem, but from now on we want to be part of the solution. We see a clear link between acting sustainably and commercial success. Only those who integrate sustainability into their business strategy remain relevant to their customers. We believe sustainability is the competitive advantage of the future."
