Zalando puts another twenty robots to work at its distribution centre in Lahr, southern Germany. These are Magazino's Toru robots, which provide support during order picking.

Zalando is already used to working with the robots: eight Toru robots have been driving around the DC since 2019. Twenty more will be added before mid-2022. The location in Lahr is the most suitable for automation, according to Zalando, because with 130,000 square metres there is enough space there for the robots and their loading stations. The robots mainly pick shoe boxes, which they then deliver to warehouse workers.

Carl-Friedrich zu Knyphausen, director of logistics development, on the additional robot deployment: "We are constantly looking for smart new technologies to support our rapid growth, especially when it comes to repetitive tasks. By adding robots, we can deploy staff in other areas. For example, our colleagues can focus on more complex tasks, such as putting together Express orders for our customers, while the robots focus on continuous shoe picking."
