Ordering your food and having it delivered at home is becoming increasingly popular among Dutch consumers and the food sector is benefiting well from this. In 2015, delivery and takeaway sales rose by eight per cent to 1.13 billion euros. Food Service Instituut Nederland (FSIN) conducted research and published the data at the Horecava in Amsterdam.
Mainly the smaller delivery and takeaway services such as pizza couriers, thuisbezorgd.nl and tafeltje-dek-je did well. They achieved better sales than retailers' delivery and pick-up services, which turned over 450 million in total turnover.
Shift
An increasing shift is taking place in the food market. Consumers are moving more often from the traditional middle to the far end of the market. In doing so, budget restaurants are increasingly popular. The food sector therefore needs to move fast, and social media can be a tool in this. FSIN reveals in the report, "Traditional restaurant types that do not move with this consumer are out of business faster than in their worst nightmares, partly because social media accelerates this behaviour."
New players
Some news players are websites and apps that make it easy to score a meal. Services such as Thuisafgehaald.nl, Airdnd.nl and Marleenkookt.nl are examples. Here, consumers serve as cooks, taking over the role of traditional players. The internet, social media and apps make it easy for consumers to enter the market.
